B&B Experience.

Brought to you by your very own...me! We have been enjoying the Airbnb experiences and today, I decided to host one of my own.

I have been making banana breads for people and they have LOVED it! It is something that they have not had here in India and it is really what everyone talks about. I figured that since we are not that comfortable hosting because we are not sure if people would like our version of the local food (side note: we love it and John has really mastered it), I would try baking. And it has been clutch.

One of my neighbours really loved the banana bread and asked if she could watch me make it and of course I said yes. And I decided I was going to create and Airbnb experience and call it B&B experience for "Brinda bnb experience". You know me, I was going to go over the top and make a lemon bundt cake for us to have while the banana bread was baking but forgot an ingredient and our power kept going out. Instead, I just prepped mostly everything and showed her a couple of steps.











We thoroughly enjoyed it. Neelu and I just chatted and went through the process so she could see how it looked at each step. We mostly chatted, but we did bake too. And I made her do some of the steps to get the feel of the texture of the batter.



Honestly, it was nice to just talk about life. She lived in Ohio for a while but was born and raised in India. I loved hearing her story and her spending time with our family. She also works at Indus (where the boys go to school and where I do observations on the Design Thinking Process) so the boys loved showing her what they have learned. And she told us about this place where her son and her volunteer and the boys got really excited to go and give their bikes to these kids. Truly a wonderful Friday evening with now a forever friend and we made a beautiful banana bread together.

Next experience on the list for B&B is a lemon bundt cake with a lemon glaze. It will be interesting because their lemons are a bit sweeter here but I love the challenge.

John’s world...habits

One of the things I’m most interested in dicovering when I travel abroad are the habits I engage in after the trip.  Some are short lived.  Some involve a gadget I bring back.  Some become an integral part of who I am.  Years ago I was in Mexico and I noticed the friends I was staying with would drink their water out of a clay pot.  They told me  that it keeps the water naturally cool and removed toxins (like many things apparently do).  So of course I brought a giant clay pot with me back to the United States.  The habit was short lived.  I drank water out of the pot for two weeks and regifted it to someone as a wedding present.  I called it a wedding pot even (I’m terrible and if I gave you that pot please post that I’m a bad person in the comment section). I had coffee for the first time in Spain.  I prop my foot on the bar at a pub like a proper local in Britain would posture themselves.  Habits that have lasted....

Farmhouse Retreat

My class on Education Policy and Decentralisation took a field trip to a village. One of the students, Sanjeet, was kind enough to offer his farmhouse for all of us to stay at the night before. Sanjeet has an amazing story which I will save for another post. Briefly though, for 20 years or so he worked in the corporate world and decided to leave his job and enter in the MA program at Azim Premji University. His family runs a school in a village outside Bangalore and he wanted to learn more about education in India and put his talents to good use in the social sector. There was about 15 of us including my Professor, Dr. Paik. This class is more like a community and how they interact with each other, with me, and our Professor is a case study in itself.
