Ugadi, Chetti Chand, Hindu New Year
This is not going to be a post about an Indian holiday and why it is celebrated but how a community comes together. We have been living in Dedham for almost 7 years and we have never come together as a neighborhood for a celebration or a block party or anything that unites us as a neighborhood. Here at Confident Bellatrix (our neighborhood in Bangalore) there have been several such occasions where old, middle aged, young adults, and kids come together for a celebration. And mind you we have only been here for 4 months. It is really nice to see everyone celebrating and sitting at the table together. This neighborhood mind you is not an apartment complex. It is like a gated community and everyone owns or rents a stand alone, independent house. Is it fair to say it is a culture thing? That in the states it is more formal and harder to gather people from various ages whereas here in India it is in some ways expected? I don't really know the answer, but I like the sense of community here and hope to bring that back to our neighborhood in Dedham.
