Movie Day with Neighbourhood Friends aka Theatre 51


John came up with a great idea to have some of James and Ashram's friends over for a movie day. Between 11-4pm no one goes outside because it is so hot so this past Saturday we hosted some of their friends. They watched the Lego Batman movie on the iPad. And surprisingly no one commented on watching the movie on the iPad. They all enjoyed the movie. Well the girls left in the middle of the movie. It was not really their speed.





It was really nice to have them over. I am not sure going over other people's houses is a common practice. Most kids play in a common area or on the steps of their house. When we invite them inside, they always say "no thank you, I will wait outside." We just go with the flow, but this time we tried something new. I went and asked their moms and they had no issues. James and Ashram loved it. Here is what they said about movie day.

My class on Education Policy and Decentralisation took a field trip to a village. One of the students, Sanjeet, was kind enough to offer his farmhouse for all of us to stay at the night before. Sanjeet has an amazing story which I will save for another post. Briefly though, for 20 years or so he worked in the corporate world and decided to leave his job and enter in the MA program at Azim Premji University. His family runs a school in a village outside Bangalore and he wanted to learn more about education in India and put his talents to good use in the social sector. There was about 15 of us including my Professor, Dr. Paik. This class is more like a community and how they interact with each other, with me, and our Professor is a case study in itself. Caste System in India

Author's Note: Please know that I am trying to understand the Caste system in India and I am just thinking out loud based on what I am learning in my Class, Caste, Gender course. There is NO judgement. They are just thoughts. General History of Caste courtesy of BBC News:   Manusmriti , widely regarded to be the most important and authoritative book on Hindu law and dating back to at least 1,000 years before Christ was born, "acknowledges and justifies the caste system as the basis of order and regularity of society". The caste system divides Hindus into four main categories - Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and the Shudras. Many believe that the groups originated from Brahma, the Hindu God of creation. At the top of the hierarchy were the Brahmins who were mainly teachers and intellectuals and are believed to have come from Brahma's head. James's Assembly at Indus International School

Please watch the short video first. These two kids are in the 2nd grade and they emceed the assembly. The spoke so eloquently. It was 1 hour long where the 2nd graders took us on a journey of their learning. The topic was "how we organise ourselves". We learned about their field trips to a vegetable farm and a dairy farm, how they learned how to write simple procedures for making lemonade, washing their hands, and brushing their teeth. They used examples from the field trip to understand the concept of money and addition and subtraction. Students created a drama reenactment of how to make ketchup and peanut butter. Students read their original stories about french fries and hot apple cider. And for the finale they had an action song about farming which James starred in.
