James's Assembly at Indus International School

Please watch the short video first. These two kids are in the 2nd grade and they emceed the assembly. The spoke so eloquently. It was 1 hour long where the 2nd graders took us on a journey of their learning. The topic was "how we organise ourselves". We learned about their field trips to a vegetable farm and a dairy farm, how they learned how to write simple procedures for making lemonade, washing their hands, and brushing their teeth. They used examples from the field trip to understand the concept of money and addition and subtraction. Students created a drama reenactment of how to make ketchup and peanut butter.

Students read their original stories about french fries and hot apple cider. And for the finale they had an action song about farming which James starred in. Lets see if you can find him in the
pictures below.

After the assembly, I went back to observing my mentor teacher at the school and I was just in awe of the performance and how well rounded the kids were with their skills and abilities at the age of 7 and 8. I keep going back to the question, what happens after elementary school? Does all the active learning disappear?
